SDCC '12 | Sunday programming schedule announced
Comic-Con
2012's Comic-Con International wraps up on Sunday with its traditional focus on kids. Kid-friendly properties like LEGO Ninjago, video game characters Sonic and Mega Man, SpongeBob SquarePants, Carton Network's Ben 10 and Level Up!, and many more are represented, along with creators like Raina Telgemeier, Art Baltazar and Franco, Shane Houghton and others who know a thing or two about creating great kids' comics.
Comic publishers get their final chance to talk up their lines, as Marvel, DC Comics, Image, Archie, IDW Publishing and more are represented. The schedule also includes spotlight panels for Jason Shiga, Angelo Torres, Tom Yeates and Alison Bechdel.

10:00-11:00 Spotlight on Jason Shiga' Comic-Con special guest Jason Shiga is best known for his interactive comics, including Meanwhile and Knock Knock. He will present a career retrospective detailing his unlikely journey from math genius to cartoonist. Jason will discuss past, present, and future projects including an exclusive peek at his latest comic, Demon. Come and see some of his crazier interactive comic creations that have never been published, including the only known comic with movable parts. Room 4
10:00-11:00 The Annual Jack Kirby Tribute Panel' There might not be comic book industry were it not for Jack Kirby'and if you don't know who that is, you really don't belong at this convention. Each year, his friends and co-workers gather to talk about Jack and his work and to marvel (no pun intended) at the length and breadth of his influence, not just on comics but on TV, movies, and all the arts. This year, the dais will include Herb Trimpe (Incredible Hulk), Stan Goldberg (Marvel colorist), Paul Dini (Batman), and Charles Hatfield (Hand of Fire), all chatting with moderator Mark Evanier (Kirby: King of Comics). 10:30-12:00 Comics Arts Conference Session #13: Super-Bodies: Overcoming Disability Through Superheroism' Scott Daniel Boras (Arizona State University) examines the abject bodies of popular depictions of mutants, monsters, and aliens as they emerge in relation to key historical events, and also dominant social tensions that play out on the body. Ultimately, these bodies are depicted as being both utopian and dystopian at the same time, highlighting how even our greatest heroes are also often monsters. Rachelanne Smith (California State University, Sacramento) makes the case that the superhero is directly linked to the classic literary tradition of the flawed hero. The defects in the hero are the means through which we can better relate to and accept him. Using Professor X as a case study, Smith explores the relation between the strength of the hero and his or her corresponding flaw or disability. José Alaniz (University of Washington, Seattle) examines how Marvel's The Human Fly ' 'the wildest superhero ever-because he's real!' ' flouts the genre's usual conventions, possessing no superpowers but overcoming a devastating injury through sheer willpower, and simultaneously challenges and reaffirms accustomed notions of both superheroism and disability. 11:00-12:00 Spotlight on Angelo Torres' Legendary artist and Comic-Con special guest Angelo Torres and moderator Grant Geissman (author of Foul Play: the Art and Artists of the Notorious 1950s EC Comics!) discuss and show work covering Torres's entire career. Angelo began in the mid-1950s for EC Comics as a member of the Fleagle Gang, a group of artists that included Al Williamson, Frank Frazetta, and Roy Krenkel. The presentation will also include discussion and examples of Torres's work for Stan Lee at Atlas comics, for Sick magazine, and for the Warren magazines Creepy, Eerie, and Blazing Combat, as well as his 40-year association with MAD magazine. 12:00-1:00 Comics Arts Conference Session #14: Character Generation: Cultural, Economic, and Identity Politics' Featuring comic creator Phil Jimenez (Fairest), cultural anthropologist Stanford W. Carpenter (School of the Art Institute of Chicago), design historian John Jennings (State University of New York, Buffalo), and Visual and Critical Studies MFA candidate Beverly Taylor (School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Dumbbell Blonde), this panel discusses the creation of comic book characters and identity in mainstream, independent, and digital comics as well as fine arts settings. In addition to their observations, panelists will also discuss their own experiences creating comic characters. Issues will include why diversity matters, diversity in different comic media forms, creating diversity in comic universes that lack diversity, reasons for rebooting existing characters, use of source material, and the creation of alter-egos, avatars, autobiographical characters, and characters with identities that are different from their creators. 1:00-2:30 Comics Arts Conference Session #15: Politics, Economics, and Ideology' Marc Singer (Howard University) examines representations of corporations and branding in Grant Morrison's comics, looking at the shifts in Morrison's depictions of corporate power and identity in The Invisibles, Marvel Boy, Seaguy, and Batman Incorporated as well as Morrison's work as a corporate consultant and 'brand guru' and his controversial comments about corporate-owned superhero characters and creators' rights in Supergods. Jason Tondro (University of California, Riverside) examines the Superman of Morrison's Action Comics as a liberal superhero. Is this Superman liberal, and is the project successful? Karma Waltonen (University of California, Davis) argues that Mark Millar's Red Son asks us to consider whether a superhero (or by extension a supersoldier or superweapon) should ever be in a national hand, subject to any prevailing ideology or border-defined grudge. The book's ending blends both the USA and the USSR into a utopia, giving the majority of the world's citizens an amalgam of socialism and capitalism, and combines Luthor and Superman, exploding the dichotomy of hero and villain as the planet is aligned in a post-structuralist, post-nationalist paradigm.
